Upper partial chords: what to do (D7#9, Ebmaj7#11…)

• don’t play the 9, 11 or 13 notes
• focus on the core of the chord up to the 7th: chord tones 1 3 5 7
• drop one of the core tones, often the 5th or root if there’s a bass player
